Meanwhile, another alderman was seeking legal clarification from the city s corporation counsel regarding Williams re-submission.
The ordinance is on Tuesday s committee of the whole agenda and will likely get moved to the debate agenda for March 16.
Williams, the president of the board of directors for the Faith Coalition for the Common Good, was voted down 6-3. Under emergency passage, Williams needed seven yes votes.
Langfelder put forward Williams to succeed Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, who was appointed to fill the seat of former Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, in the 48th Senate District of the Illinois General Assembly. Turner had served in Ward 3 since 2011.
Roy Williams Jr., a community organizer and Army veteran, has been named the replacement for Sen. Doris Turner, D-Springfield, on the Springfield City Council.
Mayor Jim Langfelder announced Friday that Williams had beaten out eight others to serve the final two years of Turner s term. The others who showed interest included Billy Earl, Bill Eddington II, Diane Howard, Fredrick Jackson, District 186 Board District 6 Representative Judith Johnson, Sangamon County District 19 Board Member Vera Small, former Capitol Township trustee Candice Trees and Nadine Wright. The nomination will be presented Tuesday to the full city council. Williams will be up for election in 2023, when the next round of city elections are slated to be held.

SPRINGFIELD Doris Turner, a Springfield alderwoman, has been chosent to succeed former state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, to represent the 48th Legislative District.
Manar resigned his state senate seat to take a senior advisor’s post with Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The 48th State Senate District stretches from the east side of Springfield to Decatur then heads south to include Christian and Montgomery counties and portions of Macoupin and northern Madison counties.
Last month the selection committee named eight finalists for his replacement, including Macoupin County Board Member Roberta Vojas. The 48th Legislative District Committee met Saturday to discuss the post and voted unanimously to appoint Turner to fill the remainder of Manar’s Illinois Senate term.

Eight people are being considered to complete the unexpired term of State Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), who recently resigned to take a job as a senior advisor for Governor JB Pritzker. Among the finalists are a handful of candidates from Springfield and a candidate for State Representative in last fall s election.
Chase Wilhelm lost his bid to unseat Republican Avery Bourne of Morrisonville in November. Also being considered is current Macoupin County Board member Roberta Vojas, Decatur Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe, and a handful of others. Interviews with the finalists are planned for this weekend. A decision will be made at a time and location still to be announced.
