Laughably off-limits, the UK s travel green list does little to inspire holiday hopes

Green list destinations such as South Georgia are hardly fly-and-flop holiday favourites Credit: Getty Green means ‘go’, yes? Well, not always – as this week’s traffic lights announcement has demonstrated. While the green list contains a surprisingly generous 12 destinations, many – including Australia, Singapore and New Zealand – are simply off-limits to British leisure travellers thanks to their own border measures. Alas, they look likely to remain so for the foreseeable.  But what’s that – British Overseas Territories? Many of our own islands, in locations all over the world, have also been granted ‘green’ status. St Helena, the Falkland Islands, the South Sandwich Islands… forget scrabbling for sunloungers on Madeira and Crete, these spots offer real far-flung escapism. Could the last few crumbs of the British Empire offer up some crowd-free holiday hopes?

U K Reopens Travel to 12 Locations as Tourist Hotspots Miss Out

U.K. Reopens Travel to 12 Locations as Tourist Hotspots Miss Out Bloomberg 1 day ago Christopher Jasper, Tim Ross and Siddharth Philip (Bloomberg) Britain will permit relatively open leisure travel to just 12 nations and territories including Portugal as it seeks to restart tourism while keeping control over the coronavirus pandemic. A legal ban on international leisure trips will be eased from May 17, the Department for Transport confirmed on Friday. Return journeys from approved countries will require Covid-19 tests but no period of quarantine. Also on the “green list” with Portugal and its island provinces of Madeira and the Azores are Israel, Iceland, the Faroes, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand and Australia, together with the British territories of Gibraltar and the Falklands. There’s no place for the European holiday hotspots of Spain, Greece and France, and trans-Atlantic trips vital to some airlines remain on hold.

Global travel sector prepares for vaccine-powered revival

Apr 27, 2021 Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage in many corners of the world, places that have successfully vaccinated a substantial share of the population are plotting the next step: how to let people start traveling again, whether for beach vacations or board meetings. By early summer, countries of the European Union and beyond aim to issue vaccine passports that would let those who have been inoculated freely cross borders. Some places Australia and New Zealand, for instance, and Singapore and Hong Kong are joining together to create “travel bubbles” that allow citizens to visit without mandatory quarantines. And governments are drawing up lists of vaccines and tests they deem sufficiently effective to permit entry.
