Last week, worked wrapped up on a $62 million improvement package at West Albany High that included a new auxiliary gym, a new auditorium that will be shared with the community, upgraded vocational education spaces, an upgraded student commons, a new entryway, tennis courts and seismic renovations. The week before saw the completion of a $13.2 million project at South that included theater upgrades, improvements to the commons and Building 10, roof repairs, bathroom improvements and new voc-ed classrooms. Albany police chief responds to back to school controversy amid social media outrage

K. RAMBO The unfolding controversy surrounding the relationship between Greater Albany Public Schools and local police included another development late Wednesday night. Police Chief Marcia Harnden issued a statement about Albany officers being asked to leave Albany public school campuses during back-to-school celebrations last week. Harnden also asked that people stop spreading “dangerous and hurtful messages” on social media. “To our students and families of color who may have been upset or had concerns about our presence on the first day of school, we sincerely regret that you did,” Harnden said. “Our intent was to welcome you back and give you a reason to feel safe and welcome.  I m sorry if the experience was negative.”
