Amsterdam schools go virtual until after holiday break | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 Greater Amsterdam School District students won’t return to school for in-person learning until Jan. 4 at the earliest after district officials on Sunday announced they were shifting students to online learning until after the holiday break. Officials cited rising COVID-19 cases in Amsterdam and across Montgomery County and said the decision was made jointly with the Montgomery County health department. Amsterdam Superintendent Richard Ruberti in an interview Sunday said more than 50 district staff members were in quarantine as of this weekend, complicating the district’s ability to operate schools for in-person instruction.

The decision was made following a Sunday meeting with the Montgomery County Department of Health and the District s Administrative Cabinet. This action is being taken due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Amsterdam community and the escalating number of teachers and staff being placed on mandatory quarantine as a precaution to possible exposure. Teachers will also have the option of teaching remotely during this time and office staff will be reduced.
