Letters April 28: Macdonald statue; value of music education

Macdonald belongs in Bastion Square The John A. Macdonald statue, an excellent statue presentation of Canada’s first prime minister (and Victoria’s MP from 1875 to 1882) was removed from its location at Victoria City Hall and placed in some dark and dusty place in 2018 without any public input or public understanding of its relocation site. Cathy Blackstock said, at a public session, that “it is important to make space for both sides of an issue, to avoid reducing figures, such as Macdonald, with one-dimensional ‘evil doers’.” In other words, there is much positiveness in the life of Macdonald, while on the other hand, some negative positioning.

Students plan another musical protest to support school programs

Students plan to be at the district’s Boleskine Road offices from 4-7:30 p.m. playing their instruments. Their efforts will directly precede Monday night’s school board meeting, which is being held virtually. The board is facing a $7-million budget deficit, and proposed music-related cuts would save over $1 million. Services for gifted students and meal programs are among other possible cuts. Cedar Hill Middle School music teacher Cindy Romphf, who is president of the Greater Victoria Music Educators Association, said the student musicians will gather in small groups to ensure COVID safety. “We are also doing a car rally,” she said.

April 24 letters: Health system must be seen as a whole; easier public transit

We tell people to see a family doctor if they have mental-health concerns. I recently asked family doctors who refer to my psychiatry practice what they need. They told me they can’t access resources for patients too complex to treat in a family practice or walk-in clinic. Therapists cost big money people don’t have. Psychiatrists aren’t taking patients, have year-long waiting lists, and see most people only once. People are getting sicker and sicker. Too many end up in the emergency room. Most leave no closer to the long-term solutions they need. The entire mental-health system is a living organism, one part affecting the other. We can’t throw money at parts of it without measuring how the whole is functioning. Measure, invest where needed, and measure again. Transparency and accountability top to bottom.
