SPOKANE, Wash. – This historic heatwave is killing people in the northwest and some of them are our neighbors. 11 people are now dead; the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office saying they’re likely heat-related.
Four more people were reported dead on Friday morning, and it’s possible that number could keep growing.
The Spokane Fire Department says it’s seeing double the number of calls this week. On average, they get about 120 a day, but during this week of the historic heatwave, they’ve been getting about 240 calls for help each day.
Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer believes many of those calls have some type of connection with the heat.

SPOKANE, Wash. Meals on Wheels is partnering with local pharmacies to make sure some the area’s most vulnerable community members have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Safeway and Albertson’s pharmacies have set aside appointments specifically for senior citizens who utilize Meals on Wheels services, and the organization is helping to secure them an appointment.
Not only that, the organization is also helping get those people to the pharmacy.
Tom Lawson volunteers with Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels and, as a result, was able to get his vaccine, too.
“We’ve been waiting for a long time for this,” said Lawson. “I feel now that I can do other things I’ve been holding out on all this time. Can’t wait for the second shot.”

SPOKANE, Wash. Driving conditions can easily turn dangerous when it snows in Spokane, which is why the Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels is thinking ahead to make sure seniors in need have access to food despite the forecast.
“As the largest senior nutrition delivery program in Spokane County, we have over 600 people who rely on us to deliver a meal and a warm smile every day,” said Janet Dixon, communications director for GSC MOW. “For 34% of the seniors on our program, it’s the only meal they get and for 54% of our clients, our volunteer will be the only person they see on a given day.”
