Hyderabad, Dec 18 : The Bharatiya Janata Party s newly-elected corporators in Greater Hyderabad on Friday took a pledge at the Bhagyalakshmi temple abutting historic Charminar.
Party s Telangana unit president Bandi Sanjay Kumar administered oath to 48 corporators. They took a pledge to stay away from corruption, serve the people and abide by the party principles.
Temple committee welcomed Sanjay Kumar, MLA Raja Singh and corporators, and felicitated them. They all had darshan before taking the pledge.

In the 2019 general election, Karnataka was the only state in the south where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) notched up more than half the vote share (51.4 per cent). The five states in the region send 129 members to Parliament, so it was no surprise that a concerted campaign was launched to enlarge the saffron footprint before 2024 and the next Lok Sabha election. The party also knew that for this to happen, leveraging the state assembly election was crucial like it did in Karnataka in 2018 (it polled 36.2 per cent of the vote and fell just nine short of the majority in the 224-seat house).

After public uproar over the decision to buy 17 iPhones for outgoing mayor, deputy mayor and other members of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) standing committee, the state government on Friday put the decision on hold. Arvind Kumar, secretary, urban development said he spoke to GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar and the decision to buy iPhones had been put on hold indefinitely.
Outgoing GHMC standing committee, at its meeting on Thursday, decided to gift 17 iPhone 12 Pro Max (512 GB), each costing Rs 1.6 lakh, to Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, Deputy Mayor Baba Fasihuddin and 15 other members. The committee, the highest decision-making authority in GHMC, approved a budget of Rs 27.23 Lakh for purchasing the gadgets.

The outgoing standing committee of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, headed by the mayor, had gifted themselves the flashy devices for having approved the annual budget estimates of the civic body.
