Do you have a cool idea that could cut waste and single-use plastics in Abu Dhabi? You have until February 13 to apply for the Ma’an Social Incubator (MSI) programme. The Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an said on Thursday that based on an environment theme, it was looking for innovative solutions that can also promote sustainable ecotourism across Abu Dhabi. Social entrepreneurs who have an exciting business idea which can be turned into a product or service are encouraged to apply for funding and a package of business development support through the MSI.

Abu Dhabi explores social innovation in waste management and environment protection

Abu Dhabi: A reported 13 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans every year, with 9.8 million tonnes of solid waste found in Abu Dhabi emirate. A panel discussion organised by the Authority of Social Contribution, Ma’an, and Abu Dhabi’s environment sector regulator, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD), explored the importance of protecting the environment. The session was part of Ma’an’s ‘Join the Conversation’ series. Panellists explored how to minimise waste and the use of single-use plastics, as well as how to promote sustainable ecotourism in the emirate. They also highlighted how a sustainable environment can help boost the economy and public health.

Athletes with special needs make history at tough Hatta endurance race

SHARE A dozen athletes with special needs celebrated after finishing a gruelling endurance challenge in Hatta at the weekend. They cycled across mountainous terrain for 13km, set off on a trail run for 5.5km and kayaked for a kilometre along with more than 300 people from across the country in the Garmin Quest race on Friday. It was the first time a group of people with special needs in the UAE took part in a demanding adventure sport challenge.
