Contee. Second US Capitol Police Officer Commits Suicide Amid his Tuesday hearing in front of the House Appropriations Committee, Contee revealed in his testimony that Jeffrey Smith, who had served the Metro Police Department (MPD) for around 12 years, took his own life following the incident. The death of US Capitol police officer Howard Liebengood, who was a former Senate sergeant-at-arms son, was earlier reported. MPD Chief Robert Contee did not get into specifics but merely stated Officers Smith and Liebengood were present at the US Capitol on January 6 and took their own lives in the aftermath of the violence.
