Chronicles Of A Chronic Caribbean Chronicler By Earl Bousquet
The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has a visionary Ten-Point Strategic Plan for self-sufficiency and globalization that will see enrollment multiply, services offered beyond the Caribbean and its now-globally-branded reputation capitalized for revenue.
But its success will depend on the region’s governments paying outstanding debts and revisiting contributions and investments in education and the university developing brand new relationships with international partners and the region’s private sector.
The Plan was presented in detail to journalists Tuesday (March 2) by UWI Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles during a virtual press conference ahead of a series of meetings across the region yesterday and today to discuss their commitments to the university’s financial future.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is going to the bond market to raise US$60 million to finance the establishment of an offshore medical university in Trinidad and Tobago this year, as part of a range of measures to place the institution on a sound financial footing over the next five years.
The regional institution plans to transform itself into a global university providing education to 100,000 students all over the world online, UWI Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hillary Beckles disclosed on Monday.
Speaking at a virtual press conference Sir Hillary outlined a 10-point strategic plan for the financing and future operations of the institution, inclusive of increasing earnings and slashing debt.
The University of the West Indies is expanding its presence across the globe as it seeks to increase its revenue streams.

The UWI, Press Release
Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. Tuesday, December 8, 2020 The UWI Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles recently congratulated his strategy and leadership group for successfully guiding the University through the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. He called upon the region to recognise the excellent work done by the teams on all campuses across the region in transitioning the University to full online/remote teaching and management, enabling students to progress through their programmes of study.
He indicated, however, that the time is right to return the gaze to addressing the most important matter of repositioning the University to be globally competitive and financially sustainable in its journey to 2025-2030. Only a reengineered UWI, he said, will be able to deliver even more effectively on the region’s development agenda.
