Winston Smith Jr. s killing by members of a federal task force in Minneapolis last month is prompting fresh scrutiny of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, along with its newly formed unit dedicated to investigating violent or deadly police encounters and other misconduct.
The latest investigation lies with the year-old Force Investigations Unit (FIU), specifically dedicated to decreasing law enforcement violence. The unit has 23 staffers, including a special-agent-in-charge, two assistant special agents, 13 senior special agents, two criminal intelligence analysts and a victim, family and community relations coordinator. I want everyone in Minnesota to know we have a strong commitment to continually improve, BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said in an interview last week from his office in St. Paul. People may not feel good about an outcome, but I want people to have trust in our process.
Castile was shot during a traffic stop in 2016 by former St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez. Author: Deevon Rahming (KARE11) Updated: 10:38 PM CDT July 6, 2021
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. A vigil for Philando Castile was held Tuesday in Falcon Heights at the site where Castile was killed five years ago to the day.
His mother, Valerie Castile was joined by dozens of community members demanding justice for all lives lost to police brutality. We all saw that man shoot my son, said Valerie.
That man is former St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez.
He shot castile during a traffic stop in 2016, and the entire thing was streamed on Facebook live by Castile s girlfriend Diamond Reynolds who was in the car at the time of the incident.
The bill still has to be signed by the governor, but all signs are pointing to marijuana being legal in New Mexico come 2022.
What will it mean for Texans?
Anthony Police Chief Carlos Enriquez is concerned many will blur the state lines and struggle to know where New Mexico ends and Texas begins.
“It’s going to create a bigger challenge for us,” Enriquez said. “Not only on the enforcement side but on the education side.”
Enriquez said the most important thing will be educating people that even though marijuana will be legal in Anthony, New Mexico - only a few feet away in Anthony, Texas it will still be illegal.
