From The Tribune staff reports BIRMINGHAM The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning those who possess a Pistol Permit about a new scam. The company that provides the software for online renewals first alerted online users about the scam. Permitium distributed an email stating, “The link is malicious and has NOT been generated by Permitium or your local agency Permit Director Software.  NO TEXT MESSAGES FROM PERMITIUM CONTAIN LINKS.” The sheriff’s office said scammers sent text messages to users stating their permit needs to be renewed or changed. A link contained in the email takes the user to a website to provide the permit holder’s personal information.

The sheriff’s office says the scam comes in a text message and offers a link to provide the permit holder’s information. Permitium, the company that provides the software that allows on-line renewals has distributed an email that states: “The link is malicious and has NOT been generated by Permitium or your local agency Permit Director Software. NO TEXT MESSAGES FROM PERMITIUM CONTAIN LINKS.”

The scam targets those who have a concealed carry permit and is carried out via text message. Sgt. Joni Money said those who have received the texts were told that their permit needs to be renewed or changed and offers a link to where the permit holders can give their information. Permitium, the company that provides the software that allows on-line renewals, has issued a statement that reads, “The link is malicious and has not been generated by Permitium or your local agency Permit Director Software. No text messages from Permitium contain links.”
