Kolkata, May 7 : The electoral defeat in West Bengal has suddenly opened a can of worms for the BJP in the Northeast.
In Assam, the BJP failed to gain a majority on its own, winning 60 of the 126 seats. Its allies AGP won 9 and BPF 4 seats, but the competition for the post of chief minister is getting bitter.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP s lead strategist in Northeast as the convenor of the pro-saffron Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), seems determined not to loose out on his lifetime ambition for the top job.

Assam: BJP led NDA wins 75 seats in Assam; Congress-led Grand Alliance garners 50 seats in the final tally
Guwahati, May 3 (UNI) In the final results of the Assam Assembly elections 2021, the BJP led NDA won 75 seats out of the 126 assembly seats while Congress-led Grand Alliance managed to win 50 seats.
BJP won 60 seats and Congress was able to garner 29 seats as announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
BJP’s alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 9 seats and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won 6 seats.
The Congress-led Grand Alliance partners, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 16 seats, Bodoland People’s Party (BPF) 4 seats and Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 1 seat.
BJP and its allies’ comfortable win in the complex state of Assam makes history it is the first non-Congress party to win back-to-back elections to the 126-seat assembly.
Assam, once seen as a Congress bastion, is bisected by the Brahmaputra which divides the land into the north bank and the south bank. The southern belt is also home to hill districts where local parties are significant contenders. There is also the Bengali-dominated Barak valley where BJP has long had influence. Barring a handful of constituencies, the saffron party retained much of the gains it had made in 2016. The dumping of its old ally, the Bodoland People’s Party of Hangrama Mohilary (which had earlier allied with Congress under Tarun Gogoi), late last year did not slow its advance to office.

New Delhi: In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP was in a pre-poll alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo Peopleâs Front (BPF). Together, the three parties won 86 of the 126 assembly seats of the state. While the AGP contested 24 seats and won 14, the BPF contested 16 seats and won 12 of them.
The Congress which had ruled the state for three consecutive terms under the chief ministership of Tarun Gogoi, contested 122 seats in the 2016 assembly polls but could win only 26 of them. It lost 53 seats in that election and was forced to form the opposition. In May 2016, a BJP-led government was formed with Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief minister.
