Rights21 hours ago Guwahati: Twenty-seven-year-old  poet and a social activist Ashraful Hussain, who won the Chenga assembly constituency located in lower Assam’s Barpeta district, is one of the youngest candidates among who either won or contested in the 126-seat Assam state assembly elections. Hussain is now an elected representative from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party.

Assam: No Muslim member in treasury bench, opposition has 31   Tue, May 04 2021 09:44:42 AM Guwahati, May 4 (IANS): For the first time in 50 years, the treasury bench of the 126-member new Assam Assembly will not have any Muslim member even as 31 members from the community, the second-highest in 38 years, have been elected in the recently concluded elections. In this year s elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party put up eight Muslim candidates, the Congress fielded 17, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) nominated 19 Muslims and a Hindu candidate. Of the 31 Muslims elected to the new House, the second-highest after the controversial 1983 elections during the height of the Assam agitation, 16 are from the Congress and 15 from the AIUDF.

Image Source: IANS News Guwahati, May 4 : The number of women legislators in the 126-member Assam Assembly has been declining from a high of 14 in 2011, eight in 2016 and only six this time. In all 74 women candidates (7.8 per cent) among the total of 946 aspirants contested the recently held three-phase Assam Assembly elections and only six of them entered into the Assembly three are of the ruling BJP, one of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and two of opposition Congress. In the previous Assam Assembly elections in 2016, 91 women candidates were in the fray with eight of them elected to the 126-member House while in 2011, 85 women had tried their electoral fate and 14, highest so far in the House, secured the success.

Altogether 74 women had contested the Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on Sunday, and only six emerged victorious.
