Move comes after all its candidates lost
The Assam unit of the BJP has dissolved its minority cell after none of its nine Muslim candidates managed to win a seat in the recently concluded Assembly election.
60 of 126 seats won
The BJP had won 60 of 126 seats in the State. Its two regional allies bagged 15.
“The Sankhyaloghu Morcha [minority cell] and all its units have been dissolved,” said the party’s state general-secretary, Rajdeep Roy, on Wednesday.
Among the losers in the Muslim-dominated seats was Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar, who had won the Sonai seat in Barak Valley in 2016. He lost the seat to Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) by 19,654 votes.

According to sources, a mob consisting of AIUDF members allegedly attacked the house of former deputy speaker and BJP’s Sonai candidate Aminul Haque Laskar’s sister. An FIR has been registered stating that about 25 people carried jars filled with petrol and tried to set the house on fire, but fled before police reached the spot.
Laskar, who lost in the recently concluded assembly polls against AIUDF’s Karim Uddin Barbhuiya by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes, alleged that the miscreants belonging to AIUDF pelted bricks and stones inside the house of his sister Jahanara Begam Chaudhury at Sonai Road and caused heavy damage. However, no one was injured.

The party was expecting 10 of the 15 Assembly seats in the Valley, but it had to remain contented with six seats. This is even though heavyweight star campaigners like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, MP Manoj Tiwari, and a host of State leaders addressed largely attended public rallies at different places in the Valley. Were these huge gatherings deceptive index of public support? Large crowds are not always indicative of a swing of votes for a party.

The BJP’s Assam unit has dissolved its minority cell after the party’s poor performance in Muslim-dominated constituencies of the state in the assembly election.
In an order issued by Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, the party said that the minority cell has been dissolved for an indefinite period of time.
