The Assam unit of the BJP has dissolved its minority cell after none of its nine Muslim candidates managed to win a seat in the recently concluded Assembly election.
60 of 126 seats won
The BJP had won 60 of 126 seats in the State. Its two regional allies bagged 15.
“The Sankhyaloghu Morcha [minority cell] and all its units have been dissolved,” said the party’s state general-secretary, Rajdeep Roy, on Wednesday.
Among the losers in the Muslim-dominated seats was Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar, who had won the Sonai seat in Barak Valley in 2016. He lost the seat to Karim Uddin Barbhuiya of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) by 19,654 votes.

Guwahati, April 6 : Five Assam Police personnel have been suspended in connection with the firing incident that left three people injured during the second phase of polling on April 1, officials said on Monday.
A Cachar district official said that after a preliminary inquiry, these five police personnel associated with Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar have been suspended.
Thirty constituencies in Bengal and 39 in Assam vote today.

The voting for the second phase of the Assam and West Bengal Assembly Elections began on Thursday morning amid tight security and all COVID-19 protocols.

Guwahati, April 1 : The voting for the second phase of Assam assembly elections began on Thursday morning amid tight security and all Covid-19 protocols, officials said.
Men, women and the first-time voters in large numbers queued up in front of the polling stations well before the voting for 39 of the total of 126 assembly seats opened at 7 a.m.
The polling would continue till 6 p.m. without any break in 13 districts.
Assam Chief Electoral Officer Nitin Khade said that 73,44,631 voters, including 36,09,959 women, are eligible to cast their votes across 10,592 polling stations including 556 all women managed polling stations.
Over 73 per cent of the 73,44,631 voters exercised their franchise till 5 p.m. in the second phase of polling in Assam on Thursday, election officials said, adding that no untoward incident was reported from the 39 constituencies, where balloting would officially end at 6 p.m. Senior election officials and police officers said that no incident of violence was reported so far from the 13 districts where the voting was underway. In a few polling stations, voting was halted for some time due to technical snags in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which were soon rectified.
