New Delhi/Guwahati, April 17 : Ahead of the election results for Assam Assembly polls, the Congress is hopeful of victory but there is a a churning in the party with state leaders insisting in informal conversations that the next Chief Minister must be chosen from one of the winning MLAs.
Since the Congress has a number of chief ministerial aspirants including Gaurav Gogoi, who is close to Rahul Gandhi, party leaders are wary of him being parachuted from Delhi at the final moment.
All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) candidates return to Assam
The AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) candidates for the recently held Assembly election in the State and a few of their Congress counterparts returned to the State from Rajasthan on Friday.

GUWAHATI: The AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) candidates for the recently held Assembly election in the State and a few of their Congress counterparts returned to the State from Rajasthan on Friday. They had left for Rajasthan on April 9, 2021. They were in a hotel at Jaipur.
The candidates differ in their statements on why they had to leave for Rajasthan . AIUDF s organizational general secretary and Mankachar candidate Aminul Islam said, The BJP has the habit of laying traps for horse-trading. They did it in Manipur, Meghalaya, Goa and a few other States. They may try this game to trap us. Such a bid from the ruling party can t be ruled out. That led us to leave for Rajasthan.

After the candidates of one of its allies returned from Rajasthan on Friday in view of the COVID-19 surge, Congress has reportedly booked a few hotels across Assam to “insulate” its candidates from possible poaching by the BJP.
The candidates are expected to be kept out of bounds till the Assembly election results are declared on May 2.
On Saturday, senior Congress leaders assembled the party’s candidates at a hotel on the outskirts of Guwahati for a closed-door meeting. The party said one must not read too much into the meeting where only “general discussions” related to the day of counting were held.
