Ten central trade unions on Tuesday asked their members to hold demonstrations on June 26 to support the farmers’ agitation against the new farm laws.
Farmers under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, are protesting since November 26, 2020, against the three farm laws. The 10 central trade unions have been supporting the farmers’ agitation from the beginning.

On June 26, farmer unions will hold sit-ins at Raj Bhavans and in front of offices of district collectors across the country to mark the completion of seven months of the agitation.
The trade unions also demanded a legal guarantee for the minimum support price for farm produce.
Coimbatore: Sanitary workers of the city corporation staged protests on Wednesday morning, demanding to be considered on par with frontline workers.
Members of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Tamil Nadu Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Association took part in protests across the state.
Workers are not provided safety gear, mainly gloves, said AITUC district secretary N Chandran. “Corporation officials should check oxygen level of the workers using oximeter every morning and ensure that the workers have safety gear before deploying them for work,” he said.

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has called upon the State government to extend the incentives and relief provided to frontline workers to conservancy staff too.
In a memorandum to the government submitted through Collectors and local body officials, AITUC said government doctors, nurses and other workers in the health department had been categorised as frontline workers and incentives and relief were extended to them and their families in the event of their death due to COVID-19. However, the supporting role played by conservancy workers of local bodies had been neglected.

All India Trade Union Congress on Tuesday asked the territorial administration to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to rein in the rising price of petroleum products.
General secretary of AITUC Seethu Selvam in a statement said the oil companies have increased the price of petrol and diesel 17 times in the last one month. As on Tuesday, petrol was selling at Rs 94.50 and diesel at Rs 88.72 in Puducherry.
The existing restrictions to control COVID-19 had caused undue hardship to people, especially to those in the unorganised sector. The Central government would not do anything that would be against the interest of oil companies, he said.
