SHANGHAI, April 20 (Xinhua) Despite the pandemic, China s eye-catching achievements in attracting foreign investment over the past year has borne witness to the confidence of foreign investors in the country s law-based business environment, and therefore provides opportunities to its foreign-related legal services. A law-based environment is the best environment for doing business, said Li Zhiqiang, president of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association, at the ongoing annual conference of the association held in Shanghai.
The implementation of China s Foreign Investment Law, which entered into force on Jan. 1, 2020, made concrete efforts to protect foreign investment, Li added.
2. PROPOSED RE-ELECTION OF RETIRING DIRECTORS In accordance with Bye-law 87 of the Bye-laws, Dr. Lui King Man, Mr. Cui Liguo and Mr. Lim Toon shall retire at the Annual General Meeting. All of the above retiring Directors, being eligible, will offer themselves for re-election at the Annual General Meeting. Dr. Lui King Man and Mr. Cui Liguo, who have been serving as Independent Non-executive Directors of the Company for more than 9 years, have confirmed their independence with reference to the factors set out in Rule 3.13 of the Listing Rules. The Company considers Dr. Lui and Mr. Cui are still independent in accordance with the independence guidelines set out in the Listing Rules and will continue to bring valuable business experience, knowledge and professionalism to the Board for its efficient and effective functioning.

China always arbitrarily detains human rights lawyers, in extreme cases even holding them incommunicado, should the regime find that these lawyers interfered with the regime’s vested interests. This was shown in the notorious ‘709 Crackdown’ in 2015, during which several hundred human rights lawyers and defenders
were detained or harassed and some of them reported being tortured or ill-treated during detention.
What appears to be the recent practice to repress human rights lawyers, however, is the extensive use of review, revocation or suspension of legal practice licenses against these lawyers so as to paralyse their rights to practise, and thus directly smashing their rice bowls. Such ‘strategy’ could be dissected in a threefold manner as follows.
