Tax Day 2021 is May 17. Here’s what you need to know before the deadline to file your taxes

The IRS extended the tax season deadline from Thursday, April 15 to Monday, May 17 this year. The postponement occurred due to the backlog of millions of unprocessed tax returns.
The announcement was made in March. Back then, the IRS stated there was an estimated 24 million unprocessed returns, some dated back to 2019.
“This continues to be a tough time for many people, and the IRS wants to continue to do everything possible to help taxpayers navigate the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic, while also working on important tax administration responsibilities,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a statement.

The IRS extended the 2020 tax season deadline from April 15 to May 17, due to delays in processing an estimated 24 million returns, some of which dating back to the 2019 tax season, according to reports.
While the IRS is currently struggling with processing returns, there are also millions of Americans who have yet to receive either the first or second stimulus checks.
The IRS has provided eligible Americans who haven’t received their first or second stimulus checks with the option to claim them as Recovery Rebate Credit. For individual eligible Americans with an annual income of or under $75,000, the first round of stimulus checks pushed out nearly a year ago in April 2020 were $1,200.
