Debate is a fast-paced academic sport that is not for the faint of heart. It pushes debaters beyond their perceived abilities. They have to think on their feet, control their emotions, withstand pressure, and balance time constraints. Critical thinking skills are sharpened, wits are tested, and debaters finish the year as stronger thinkers and better orators than when they began.

The University of the Cumberlands debate team has too many trophies to fit in the office where they usually practice. As it turns out, the team comes out swinging just as hard in virtual competitions as theyâve done in person. For example, they placed third in the nation (out of 25 schools in attendance) in debate sweepstakes overall in Division II sweeps at the National Christian College Forensics Association tournament held online March 25-28. And now, the team has its sights set on Rwanda.
COVID-19: Thursday update for Abilene, Taylor County, the Big Country
Hendrick Health reported on Wednesday 10 COVID-19 inpatients at the Abilene hospitals, with another three at the Brownwood hospital.
The percentage of COVID-19 inpatients in the Abilene trauma service area was 1.33% Tuesday, compared to 1.29% Monday and 1.93% Sunday, according to the state COVID-19 website.

Luther College hosts Religion in U.S. Diplomacy: From Bush to Biden

At 7 p.m. Thursday, April 15 Luther College will host Dr. Shaun Casey as he presents Religion in U.S. Diplomacy: From Bush to Biden. The virtual lecture will examine the strengths and weaknesses of recent U.S. administrations attempts to incorporate religion into diplomacy. Viewing information can be found at luther.edu/events.
Casey led the State Department’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs under the Obama administration. While in this position, he oversaw a group of 30 experts who worked directly with the convergence of religion and U.S. diplomacy. Casey will draw on these experiences to offer an analysis of the successes and failures of the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations regarding the inclusion of religion in diplomacy, and conclude by laying out what Biden s strategy might be.
