Stark County man faces fraud charges in 28-count felony indictment

CANTON The Stark County man who designed what he touted as an innovative radial engine faces a 28-count indictment accusing him of more than $600,000 in securities and investment fraud.  Charles M. Boulton, 67, of Jackson Township, was indicted Jan. 21 and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Friday in Stark County Common Pleas Court. Boulton is accused of defrauding seven investors in three startup businesses owned and operated by the defendant  Radial Engine Innovations, Radia M92 Inc. and Radia R&D LLC. Charges include 24 counts of unlawful securities practices, including securities fraud and misrepresentation in the sale of securities. He also is charged with telecommunications fraud, theft from a person in a protected class and theft.

Mistrial declared in Classie Hawthorne trial

By Ed Balint, The Canton Repository CANTON  A mistrial was declared Thursday after jurors couldn t reach a verdict in the case of a woman who contends she fatally shot her husband in self-defense after a confrontation in a vehicle in a church parking lot. Deliberations began Tuesday morning and totaled about 25 hours before jurors said they were deadlocked over the fate of Classie Hawthorne in Stark County Common Pleas Court. The 36-year-old Canton woman is charged with voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault in the death of Cleveland Hawthorne in May 2018. The trial began last week and was handled by attorneys with the Ohio Attorney General s Office, who had been appointed special prosecutors.

A Canton man was sentenced for child rape and gross sexual imposition

Terry Cassidy also pleaded guilty to third-degree felony gross sexual imposition in Stark County Common Pleas Court. The charges stemmed from sexual assaults between 2008 and 2012 when the victim was less than 10 years old, according to court records filed in the case by the Stark County Prosecutor s Office. Judge Kristin Farmer sentenced Cassidy, who also will be a lifetime sex offender registrant. The first-degree rape charge carried a potential sentence of three to 11 years in prison. The victim and her family members did not appear at Friday s plea hearing and sentencing. Stark County Assistant Prosecutor Ashley Brahler said the victim was consulted about the resolution of the case.

Skill game parlors under new zoning restrictions in Canton Township

CANTON TWP. Township officials adopted new zoning regulations for skill game parlors that will require them to have a state license before opening. The new regulations also parlor operators to get a township conditional-use permit and have their businesses in industrially zoned districts. Canton Township has seven skill game parlors in its jurisdiction. And officials are look to pursue legal action against four skill game operations. That action is pending, and township Law Director Charles Hall is collaborating with the Ohio Casino Control Commission on the matter. The issue is whether the four parlors are properly licensed. Under Ohio law, in order to operate a skill game, you need to have a license, said Jessica Franks, public relations officer for the Ohio Casino Control Commission. When the commission receives an application, we do a criminal, legal and financial review.
