RODMAN â One person is in the hospital after a two-vehicle crash knocked out power in the town Monday morning.
According to Rodman Fire Chief Josh Main, at about 8 a.m., a box truck was traveling northeast on County Route 69 when it slid on an icy patch of road, through an intersection and hit a garbage truck headed southwest on Route 177. The garbage truck was knocked on its drivers side and slid off the road, knocking out a power pole for National Grid.
The driver of the box truck was taken to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, with undetermined injuries by the South Jeff Ambulance Squad. The garbage truckâs driver was uninjured.

Syracuse, N.Y. Vascular surgeon Dr. Mohammed Khan has operated on a dozen or more patients with Covid-19, which can cause not just breathing problems but blood clots as well. That’s why Khan was among the first providers to get a Covid-19 vaccine at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital this morning.
“As health care professionals, it is our duty to get it to protect both us and other people,” Khan said. ”It’s our job to be around to take care of patients. If we are sick, who is going to take care of all these people?”

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse University plans to triple the number of Covid-19 tests it conducts on students and employees during the spring semester that begins Jan. 25.
Instead of testing random groups of students like it did in the fall semester, SU will test each student on campus every seven days. It will process the tests in its own new $1 million lab, instead of Upstate Medical University’s lab. It expects to do as many as 300,000 tests, up from about 100,000 in the fall.

It was the sixth straight day new deaths were over 100.
The statewide death toll is now 28,850. New deaths peaked at 800 in mid-April, but dropped to the single digits on many days in the summer and early fall.
Deaths have been rising since coronavirus cases began climbing in the fall. But the overall death rate is lower than in the spring as doctors have gotten better at treating the illness.

The first Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Syracuse last week, signaling the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Feelings of joy, relief and hope are tempered by profound grief at the toll the coronavirus is exacting on residents of Central New York.
The moment demands recognition, even if we don’t feel much like celebrating.
Think about it: In fewer than 10 months, scientists developed a vaccine against a new and deadly viral disease that upended the world and our daily lives. Many of our neighbors participated in clinical trials establishing its effectiveness.
