Preventing Nurse Suicides
In a new study, University of California San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Health researchers report that the rate of firearm use by female nurses who die by suicide increased between 2014 to 2017. Published December 21, 2020 in the journal
Nursing Forum, the study examined more than 2,000 nurse suicides that occurred in the United States from 2003 to 2017 and found a distinct shift from using pharmacological poisoning to firearms, beginning in 2014.
As part of the longitudinal study, researchers looked at data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System dataset.

Suicide Rate Dropped To Lowest Level Since 1999 Last Year, but Trend May Not Continue for 2020

Suicide rates in the U.S. fell in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), however, the COVID-19 pandemic could make 2020 the year with the highest recorded overall death rate but early data suggests no change to the suicide rate.
In 2018, 48,344 Americans died by suicide. In 2019, there were 47,511 suicides, a decrease of 2.1 percent over the previous year. That number indicated a halt to a 20-year-long increase in suicides although suicide is ranked as the 10th most common cause of death.
