Canada pledges support for SVG

A release from the Canadian High Commission in Barbados made available on Monday, announced that the Government of Canada has pledged CAD$440,000 in immediate aid to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in the wake of the volcanic eruption.
The funds, to be channelled through Global Affairs Canada, are expected to provide for the basic needs of displaced persons, including those in shelters, with a contribution of $50,000 to support the work of Rapid Relief Team SVG.

Suffering from a lack of access to vaccines, Latin America is experiencing another surge in coronavirus cases across a region already the hardest hit by the global pandemic.
Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia are among the countries reporting increases in new infections which are also rising right across central America and in the Caribbean. On Thursday Brazil, the region’s most populous nation which has suffered more fatalities from Covid-19 than any country bar the United States, saw its death toll pass 400,000, having registered more than 100,000 deaths since March 24th.

Hospitals in South and Central America are struggling to cope with a heavy influx of COVID-19 patients as the pandemic continues to surge across the region, Pan American Health Organization Director Carissa F. Etienne reported this week.
“Hospitalizations are at an all-time high in Costa Rica, and we expect more patients will require care as the country reported a 50% jump in cases in the last week,” Dr. Etienne told reporters at her weekly media briefing. “Guatemala’s hospitals have also reached maximum capacity,” she said, and at hospitals in Colombia, “ICU beds are running out in major metropolitan cities like Bogota and Medellin.”
