We donât really know what causes or cures Crohnâs disease, says Diane R. Javelli, a dietitian with the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
But we do know this: If you have Crohnâs, itâs harder to maintain the balance of âbadâ and âgoodâ bacteria in your gut. You have fewer of the type that can reduce inflammation. And this imbalance can lead to diarrhea and other digestive problems.

Kombucha is a sour, fizzy, fermented drink most often made with green or black tea, Javelli says. Some types of kombucha are high in probiotics. These are live microbes added to food or supplements with the intent to benefit your body. âThey are the type that live in harmony with us and help keep us healthy,â Javelli says.

Dr. Martin Brotman, former president and CEO of California Pacific Medical Center, died Dec. 20, at age 81. A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for 53 years, Brotman was the driving force behind the creation of Sutter Health s new one-million-square-foot Van Ness campus hospital and adjacent medical building, which opened in 2019.
Born on June 26, 1939, in Winnipeg, Canada, to Helen and Israel Brotman, Martin Brotman met Farron Stern, at the age of 14. The couple married on Aug. 14, 1960, when Brotman was 21 years old, and welcomed daughter Ilana in 1963, son Stuart in 1966, and daughter Brenley in 1968.
