VPR Christopher Keane to testify before Congress regarding COVID‑19 and the U S  research enterprise | WSU Insider

February 24, 2021 By Karen Hunt, Office of Research Washington State University’s Vice President for Research Christopher Keane has been invited to testify to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, & Technology’s “Building Back the U.S. Research Enterprise: COVID Impacts and Recovery” hearing on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 a.m. PST. In Keane’s capacity as VPR at WSU, he serves as chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Council on Research. He will represent WSU and APLU’s 199 U.S. member institutions. The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology has oversight of the National Science Foundation, NASA, DOE’s Office of Science and research efforts across the federal government. Richard Paxton The newest federal guidance for colleges and universities investigating sexual misconduct emphasizes due process for both the accuser and accused. Among other requirements, institutions are legally obligated to presume the accused is innocent prior to starting any investigation. That’s not what happened at Pacific University in Oregon, where one professor of education who made controversial comments about gender says he was told to quit or be found culpable in an investigation under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the federal law prohibiting gender-based discrimination. “My guy has been disappeared,” said the professor’s lawyer, Robin DesCamp, adding that it’s been more than 130 days “since my client was kicked off campus like a criminal.”

Study: Including videos in college teaching may improve student learning

 E-Mail Washington, February 17, 2021 As higher education institutions worldwide transition to new methods of instruction, including the use of more pre-recorded videos, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many observers are concerned that student learning is suffering as a result. However, a new comprehensive review of research offers some positive news for college students. The authors found that, in many cases, replacing teaching methods with pre-recorded videos leads to small improvements in learning and that supplementing existing content with videos results in strong learning benefits. The study was published today in Review of Educational Research, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.
