Five key labor unions sent a letter to President Biden this week urging him to change Jessica Rosenworcel’s status from acting FCC chair to permanent.
“Her focus on greater opportunity, accessibility and affordability in our communications services and her tireless advocacy on behalf of workers, educators, students, families and consumers has never been more important,” the unions said.
The unions signing the letter include the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the Communications Workers of America (CWA); the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); the National Education Association (NEA); and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Pension contribution rates rise for 94K Pennsylvania school employees

HARRISBURG= Pension contribution rates for tens of thousands of public school employees in Pennsylvania rose on Thursday, amid a federal investigation into some of the pension system s actions and calls for firings.
The increases took effect for about 94,000 school employees, all hired in 2011 or after. Most will see their contribution rate rise by 0.5% of their salary, while a smaller number of them will see their contribution rate rise by 0.75% of their salary.
The board of the $64 billion Public School Employees’ Retirement System revealed in March that it was investigating a consultant’s calculation about the fund’s long-term investment performance that helps determine the balance of payments into the system by taxpayers and school employees.

The National Education Association, the largest labor union in the country with 3 million members, is holding its annual meeting this week. One of the most controversial topics up for debate is whether the organization will demand that all students be vaccinated before returning to school this fall.
According to the groupâs meeting agenda, up for debate is whether âthe NEA will call for mandatory safe and effective COVID-19 vaccinations and testing for all students and staff before returning to face-to-face instruction in the fall, subject to medical exceptions in accordance with existing law, and will widely publicize this position via social media. So much for “the peaceful solution” and “this very peaceful way.”
Amani Barakat must be joking when she twice touts the “peaceful” tactics of an anti-Israel drive among West Coast teachers’ unions. Simultaneously, Barakat continues in a leading role in an organization that seeks the right of return for Palestinians to Israel, a mission that could readily lead to war.
Such a contradiction stands out with news that the leadership of the Los Angeles teachers’ union will vote in September on a resolution to “express our solidarity” with the Palestinians.
This move is revealing in generating multiple concerns not only about this pending vote but also the hypocrisy of this supposed pro-Palestinian movement. This campaign run by members of United Teachers Los Angeles campaign signals not just a willingness to go to war but also distresses Jewish students and employees, mocks the very idea of seeking social justice, lies about opposing anti-Semitism, singles out Israel
