A Historical Exhibit of the Women March and a Program on Employment Options in STEM
RANDOLPH, NJ: Participate in the Women’s History Month events at County College of Morris (CCM) and walk through time with a virtual tour of the New York Historical Society’s “Women March” and learn about STEM career opportunities for women.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is asking the community at large to join us in advocating for the passage of H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act on behalf of American working women. For 24 years, AAUW has actively advocated and lobbied for passage of this bill. Now more than ever, American women need to receive equal pay for equal work.
The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated income inequalities as demonstrated by the massive historical unemployment rates affecting American women today. The AAUW 2020 report entitled “The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap” states that “Between February and April 2020, women’s unemployment rate rose by 12.8% compared to 9.9% for men.” This has resulted in a “shecession” (a term coined by C. Nicole Mason, Ph.D. of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research) an economic downturn where 11.5 million women lost their jobs as compared to 9 million men who lost their jobs during the months of February through May 2020. The St. Augustine branch of the American Association of University Women will host Mary Gatta and Molly Vollman Makris at its March 11 meeting.
They will discuss their recently published book “Gentrification Down the Shore,” an ethnographic investigation of Asbury Park, New Jersey, to better understand the connection between jobs and seasonal gentrification and the experiences of longtime residents in this beach-community city.
Asbury Park and St. Augustine have much in common as both were developed as seasonal seaside resort towns for the wealthy to escape to during hot weather in the case of Asbury Park or cold weather in the case of St. Augustine. The study documents the tragic consequences of this kind of redevelopment, which bypasses longtime residents in favor of seasonal visitors and deprives them of access to nature, culture and civic life. In both cities, their Black communities have been left behind.
