Olivia Berman credits Lucky Clover 4-H, community for focus, drive

Santa Ynez Valley Youth in Service honoree Olivia Berman is full of gratitude: for her community, for her 4-H club, for her family and her school. “My community has made me who I am for sure. All my 4-H leaders have been volunteers who have dedicated so many hours of their lives to make sure we’re prepared for what life has in store for us. The people in my community are beyond amazing, and they have made me an image of what they are,” Berman said. A graduate of Dunn School in Los Olivos, Berman has been a core member of Lucky Clover 4-H Club for nearly a decade.

AAUW partners with Community Resource Center for Hungry Kids—Hungry Minds initiative

The Coastal Georgetown branch of the American Association of University Women (CGAAUW), in pre-COVID times, met monthly at a luncheon meeting. When the branch’s luncheons switched to Zoom meetings, the membership established an initiative of Hungry Kids—Hungry Minds, partnering with the Community Resource Center in Rehoboth Beach (CRC). CGAAUW members are donating their “lunch money” formerly spent at monthly meetings to the CRC to purchase grocery gift cards. The branch’s website has a “Donate” button for their members to give to this cause. According to Glenda Risch, Policy Committee chair, “The Hungry Kids—Hungry Minds initiative recognizes the need of many families with school children who are food insecure. Research has shown hungry children have more difficulty learning.”

In 1971, Secretary of Labor James D. Hodgson issued an order calling on all federal contractors to take affirmative action to eliminate sex discrimination. That order had little effect, and in 1977 the Office of Federal Contract Compliance announced that it planned “to get tough” with building and construction contractors who failed to seek out and train women for work on everything from steel girders to bricklaying. According to Weldon Rougeau, the head of the office, parents should start talking to their daughte
