Orange you glad a Florida outfit is targeting our elections and struggling Iowans?

Only three groups lobbied to pass the lousy elections bill that just tore like a bullet train through the Iowa Legislature, fueled by fictional fraud. There’s the Iowa Minute Man Civil Defense Corps, which supports right-wing legislation. And the Kirkwood Institute, led by Iowa attorney Alan Ostergren, who helped the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign sue “rogue” auditors last year. And then there’s the Opportunity Solutions Project, based in Tallahassee, Fla. Its lobbyist at the Statehouse, Andy Conlin of West Des Moines, is registered in favor of the elections bill, as well as measures that would cut unemployment benefits and kick folks off public assistance programs.

Bills Focus on Free Speech in N H Schools

Credit Dan Tuohy / NHPR Lawmakers in the New Hampshire State House are considering several bills aimed at protecting students free speech and curtailing what their sponsors see as liberal political bias in schools. House Bill 234 would establish rules for protecting First Amendment rights of students and speakers on campus. Much of the bill s language is drawn from model policies penned by the conservative Washington, D.C.- based American Legislative Exchange Council. Ben Mickens, a vice chair of the N.H. College Republicans and student at Saint Anselm College, told lawmakers that New Hampshire needs to take a bolder step in protecting students like him.

A new report exhaustively chronicles the local resistance to renewable energy at play in the U.S. The report, published this week by the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, finds at least 100 ordinances have been passed in 31 states that block or constrict construction of new renewable energy facilities. Meanwhile, least 152 proposed projects in 48 states have been opposed or contested by local groups. At a time when the U.S. needs to be stepping up renewables installation, these laws are slowing the transition.
