What is critical race theory in Iowa s diversity training bill?

Iowa bill limiting diversity training topics heads to Gov Reynolds

View Comments Neither classroom instruction at schools nor mandatory diversity training for government groups could teach certain concepts, such as that the United States is systemically racist, under a measure headed to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds desk.  The bill places limitations on the ideas that could be included in diversity training at those institutions, resembling a now-reversed executive order that President Donald Trump signed last year to oppose critical race theory, which teaches that racism is interwoven into America s institutions. Iowa Republicans have called critical race theory racist and said the bill would prevent student indoctrination.  Democrats have said the bill would have a chilling effect on needed discussions about racism and sexism, including concepts like structural racism and implicit bias.

Families, friends barred from sending books to inmates in Iowa state prisons: report

Is it a violation of the First Amendment? By Story at a glance Incarcerated Americans retain their constitutional right to freedom of speech, which includes access to reading materials. A new policy is restricting that access in Iowa state prisons in an attempt to fight contraband. Critics say the policy will be cost prohibitive for some inmates and restrict their access to a wide variety of reading material. A new Iowa state prison policy restricting inmates’ ability to access books has sparked an outcry from First Amendment defenders as well as friends, family and advocates, reports Iowa State Radio.  While inmates retain the right to read books and magazines, the new policy requires the inmate to place the order themselves through an approved vendor, meaning that the transaction will be subject to a number of fees and taxes as are any transfers made to inmates’ accounts for this purpose.

Man charged with threatening Reynolds cites free speech | News, Sports, Jobs

Hunter IOWA CITY An Iowa man charged with leaving a threatening voicemail telling Gov. Kim Reynolds she should be “hung for treason” defended his comments Thursday as free speech, saying he was expressing opposition to COVID-19 restrictions. Harvey Hunter Jr., 48, is charged with first-degree harassment for the profane Jan. 5 message he left on a governor’s office phone line set up to gather input over whether Reynolds should continue the partial statewide mask mandate. Hunter called the GOP governor a dictator and said “every single one of you need to be hung for treason for pushing this COVID scam,” according to a criminal complaint filed in Polk County. Growing more intense, Hunter called Reynolds two derogatory names for women and said “you need to be put in front of a firing squad,” the complaint said.
