WI16: Booksellers Told to Prepare for Constant Disruption

By Ed Nawotka | Feb 22, 2021 The freezing weather that hit Texas last week delayed author and University of Houston professor Brené Brown s appearance at the American Booksellers Association s Winter Institute 16 from Thursday to Saturday. In her online presentation delivered February 20, Brown told booksellers to improve their communication skills and not to anticipate a return to normalcy, but to prepare for a future of constant disruption. Brown opened the final day of the three-day virtual event in conversation with Janet Geddis, owner of Avid Bookshop in Athens, Ga., where the two discussed the challenges of leading an organization in this case, a bookstore during challenging times, like the ongoing pandemic, and the need to have meaningful conversations with staff.

By Alex Green | Feb 19, 2021 The American Booksellers Association’s Winter Institute began 16 years ago as a way for booksellers to get down to basics. With members in the midst of the most challenging retail environment in decades, the second day of this year’s virtual conference was true to the event s founding spirit and offered a streamlined series of sessions aimed to address indies’ core business needs. ABA’s senior financial staff, PK Sindwani and Jennifer Almodovar, led the first of three scheduled workshops on managing finances, focusing on how booksellers can create, maintain, and modify annual budgets. A lively chat discussion alongside their presentation showed just how varied booksellers’ accounting models are, and the support they need in a business with complex accounting issues.

That sounds like a big promise, but what Nielsen and its partner, Germany’s MVB, are describing is “a fully rebuilt, state-of-the art technology infrastructure.”
