Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday said the government is promoting bamboo plantation as it can help boost farmers income. The minister virtually addressed the inaugural session of National Consultation on Opportunities and Challenges for Bamboo in India . The two-day event on the bamboo sector is jointly organised by National Bamboo Mission, Niti Aayog and Invest India, according to an official statement. Tomar said the government is putting in due diligence in developing the bamboo sector since it is evident that it can be a key crop to double farmers income, increase employment opportunities and improve the livelihood of the people, especially in the North East region .

The training program was modeled for manufacturing, services and agri-allied activities. The aspirants were trained for dairy farming, establishment of small business ventures like manufacturing of hollow blocks, multi-utility stores, beauty salon, shuttering houses, retail and wholesale outlets, automobile workshops, drug stores and electrical goods etc. in different areas of Poonch district.
The trained youth hail from Mandi, Surankote, Bafliaz and Mendhar areas of the frontier district Poonch. Special sectoral training was also imparted to the trainees during the three-week course. A field-visit of the trainees to the successful business ventures in Poonch district was also part of the training program.
Official data showed that of target of 1.012 lakh candidates for training in the current fiscal under Unnati project, barely 4% or 4,181 candidates were trained as on January 20, 2021. The ministry had planned to train one adult member, between 18 and 45 years, per household who had completed 100 days of work under MGNREGA in the previous financial year.
