Abuja, Jan. 7, 2021 A NGO, Women against Violence and Exploitation (WAVE) has called for alternative sources of income for local circumcisers to discourage Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
FGM involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
The President, WAVE Foundation, Mrs Lola Ibrahim, a third generation survivor of FGM made this call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.
She noted that FGM was mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers who often played other central roles in communities such as delivery of babies and other traditional rites.

There was a mild drama at the Criminal Area Court II in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, when a serving commissioner in charge of Ministry of Youth and Sports, Sanusi Faruk, and two directors were docked for criminal conspiracy and breach of trust over a loan of N1.728 million.

Agape Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Akwa Ibom State, said it has provided medical and psychosocial care and support to 10 boys who have been victims of sexual abuse in the past three years.
Imaobong John, a counselling psychologist at the centre, told PREMIUM TIMES, Thursday, that the 10 boys are part of the 532 cases treated so far since the centre was set up in 2017.
The 11-year-old JSS1 student of the Deeper Life High School, Uyo, alleged to have been sexually abused by two senior students of the school, was taken to the centre a few days ago for medical examination, according to a statement from the Akwa Ibom State government.

She made the call on Friday when she visited Karu Primary Healthcare Centre in the FCT to welcome the First Baby of the Year 2021 at the centre.
