Yesterday evening 19 May, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets and Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres had a video meeting to give Secretary-General Guterres an overview of Estonia’s plans for chairing the work of the Council in June 2021.
Every month, one of the 15 members of the UN Security Council is presiding over its work. “The Security Council President is tasked with the smooth organisation of meetings, mediating various interests and reaching agreements,” the foreign minister said. “The presidency provides us with a chance to influence the Council agenda by highlighting issues that are important to Estonia. We plan to call high-level meetings on cybersecurity and Afghanistan, and also draw attention at a high level to the suffering of children in conflict hotspots.”
