OFF-ROAD bikers have been disturbing rare nesting birds, according to police reports. Ribble Valley Rural Task Force officers say that they have been in Salter Fell where residents have raised concerns. They have warned that off-road bikers could have a negative impact on the bird population and say they are working with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to address this problem. A police spokesperson said: We know the area is used responsibility by a large number of bikers but unfortunately a small few choose to ride off the right of way which carries the real prospect of driving these birds away.
They were brought to the UK as ornamental birds like peacocks and golden pheasants.
Like many other captive birds, they occasionally find their way out into the wild - usually escaping from nearby collections, which is likely the case at the River Stour.
The RSPB said black swan sightings have become reasonably common, as these birds can be found on almost any water body.
They have similar habitat requirements to mute swans and are often found in the same areas.
In 2012, a study of bird populations in the British Isles found there were just 37 confirmed nesting pairs of black swans in the country.
