A railway police deputy inspector hanged himself at Police General Hospital on Tuesday due to stress after contracting Covid-19, according to the Royal Thai Police Office.
Pol Maj Gen Yingyos Thepchamnong, spokesman for the office, said on Wednesday that Pol Capt Boonchu Panklin, 59, was found dead in a toilet on the 11th floor of Chalerm Phrakiat building after suffering mental health issues from his chronic illness and Covid-19 infection.

THAILAND: The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has announced it is suspending driver training and drivers license testing across the country effective yesterday (Apr 16) in an effort to stifle the spread of COVID-19, but will continue extending licenses that don’t require testing and will allow expired licenses to be used until June 30th.

DLT Director-General Jirut Wisanjit stated on Thursday that DLT offices will not be training or testing for personal drivers’ licenses or public transport licenses except for those who have already completed training at recognised schools.

At least 1,200 road checkpoints will be up and running to curb drink-driving, while local police will rein in Covid spreaders, during the Songkran festival next week, the Royal Thai Police Office announced.
National police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk chaired a meeting of senior officers to discuss safety measures during next week s long Songkran weekend at RTP headquarters on Monday.
He said the goal was to reduce traffic accidents during the holiday, one of the year s busiest travel periods, by at least 5% from figures recorded over the last three years.
Pol Gen Suwat said the meeting was attended by more than 1,400 superintendents and officers from the Immigration Bureau, the Highway Police, Border Patrol officers and Tourist Police.

The Police Commission on Friday approved a new position at headquarters, amid speculation that it will be filled by Surachate Hakparn, who is poised to return after two years of mysterious exile from law enforcement.
The advisory position, equal in rank to an assistant police chief post, was approved a week after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha signed an order to transfer Pol Lt Gen Surachate, better known as “Big Joke”, from the Prime Minister’s Office to the Royal Thai Police Office.
