RVH cleared of COVID-19 outbreaks in all units

BARRIE, ONT. Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) has been cleared of all COVID-19 outbreaks. The hospital had four outbreaks in units over the past month, which resulted in 24 patients and 27 staff infections. Additionally, 12 people died from virus-related complications. On Monday, the hospital announced the outbreak in the Cancer Palliative Unit is over. The unit has reopened to transfers and new admissions. The other units with outbreaks were the Integrated Stroke and Rehabilitation, Transitional Care Unit, and Specialized Seniors Care unit. RVH continues to restrict visitors, with some exceptions, because of the community s ongoing threat of a COVID-19 variant.

Simcoe Muskoka reports 144 new COVID-19 infections, plus two deaths

  BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka health unit reports 144 new COVID-19 cases since Friday and two more virus-related deaths. The numbers reported Monday show 77 cases in Barrie, 23 in Bradford, 11 in Innisfil, nine in New Tecumseth, eight in Penetanguishene, and four in Huntsville. Orillia, Wasaga Beach, Essa and Collingwood each had two cases, while single cases were reported in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Tiny and Tay. The health unit reports a 30 per cent jump in COVID-19 cases for the week of Feb. 14 from the week prior. It lists 271 infections last week and 210 for the week of Feb. 7. No new variant cases were reported in the region over the weekend. There have been a total of 171 UK B-117 variant infections confirmed across Simcoe Muskoka, with 187 possible cases that require confirmatory testing.

RVH Spiritual Care Team keeps families connected with their loved ones

  BARRIE, ONT. Marjorie Marshall and her husband Peter were married for nearly 40 years. When Peter battled illness and Alzheimers at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, his wife was by his side until COVID-19 hit. As of March 17, I couldn t see him, she says. But they had activity coordinators that did virtual visits. Catherine, the spiritual advisor, she had a great rapport with Peter. Marjorie says in the last year of her husband s life, with visitor restrictions at the Barrie hospital, the Spiritual Care Team made all the difference. They come from a very positive place, and we actually got to be very good friends. She (Catherine) actually officiated Peter s funeral, she says.

The outbreak began six weeks ago, on Jan. 8, with the more contagious U.K. variant of the virus being identified as the main cause. It quickly became one of the worst outbreaks in a long-term care setting in the province. RELATED: The Red Cross was deployed to the home on Jan. 17 and several other organizations including the SMDHU, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, The County of Simcoe, Hospice Huronia and The North Simcoe Muskoka Specialized Geriatric Services Program assisted with bringing the outbreak under control.
