COVID-19 News: Simcoe County hospitals planning restart of non-emergency surgeries

BARRIE, ONT. Simcoe County residents whose surgeries were postponed by the third wave of the pandemic may soon get a call to re-book. Ontario s top doctor has given some areas of the province the green light to restart non-emergency surgeries. Staff at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), Soldier s Memorial Hospital, Stevenson Memorial Hospital, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare are discussing their next steps. Local hospitals started dialling back non-emergency surgeries in early April as COVID-19 cases spiked and intensive care units were stretched to their limits. In a letter addressed to healthcare providers Wednesday, Dr. David Williams says the time is right for a change, with cases, hospitalizations, and ICU admissions trending downward.

COVID-19 Simcoe Muskoka: RVH ICU doctors write special letter of appreciation for Nursing Week

BARRIE, ONT. The week of May 10 is Nursing Week, and this year the theme is #WeAnswerTheCall. The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the courage of nurses and every frontline worker who is committed to answering that call. In the ICU, these nurses stepped up and formed an incredible workforce, said Dr. Chris Martin, RVH critical care chief and director. It is an honour to work alongside them, he added. To show their appreciation, a group of intensive care doctors at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre penned a letter about the nurses and entire ICU team at the Barrie hospital, putting into words how valued they have been throughout the pandemic.

COVID-19 News: Simcoe Muskoka s COVID-19 cases decline as virus-related deaths increase

BARRIE, ONT. COVID-19 case counts in Simcoe Muskoka are on a downward trend, as the health unit logs 244 infections for the week, compared with 443 the week prior. On Friday, the health unit lists 57 new COVID-19 infections in the region.  It s the fourth straight week with a decreasing case count, so it s very, very encouraging, said Simcoe Muskoka s associate medical officer of health, Dr. Colin Lee. But while case counts decrease, the number of deaths continues to increase. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says a Simcoe County man between 65 and 79 died after contracting the virus. He is the 12th Simcoe County resident to die with COVID-19 this month.
