Tributes following death of Martin Wakeley former chief executive of Winchester hospital

Martin Wakeley was the senior manager at the then-Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust between 2007-2009. It was the trust that ran the Royal Hampshire County Hospital before it merged with Basingstoke to form the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It was a time of chronic financial difficulties. He moved into the private sector but returned to be interim managing director of the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group in 2018-19. More recently he was working for the NHS in The Wirral as well as on the Isle of Wight. Mr Wakeley, who was in his early 50s, is believed to have died of cancer.

Lily Lomas from Winchester raises money for charity

THIS Winchester nine-year-old is in the middle of a gruelling treatment plan for a rare form of cancer. Yet, using her very little spare time between hospital appointments, Lily Lomas has raised thousands of pounds for charity. The schoolgirl, who lives in Bereweeke Avenue with her mum, dad and two siblings, first noticed a lump towards the end of 2020. A small lump had appeared on Lily s leg in September last year, which grew rapidly, said her mum Kirsty Lomas. She had no other signs of cancer. It has been called an undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma because it s so rare, even sarcoma specialists around the country don t know what type of sarcoma it is.
