  May 19, 2021 12:48:19 PM People with psychosocial disabilities living on the streets of Suva were allegedly harassed by a police officer. It is alleged that a number of those living with disabilities were forced to jump off of the Suva seawall by the police officer, a man had his trousers removed and others being photographed without their consent.  Non-Governmental Organisation Coalition on Human Rights chair Nalini Singh said this act shows that Police officers have less respect for people living with disabilities. Singh in a statement said they are speechless about the amount of disrespect police officers have with people’s fundamental human rights and even more so for persons with disabilities.

Non-Governmental Organisation Coalition on Human Rights chair Nalini Singh said they find out their input are not included in the new law after the bill is passed in parliament. Singh said they wonder whether the inputs of every Fijian to this proposed Police Bill 2020 would even matter or make a difference at all. She said if the government was serious about its international human rights commitments and priorities, then it should not rush with the bill.

NGOCHR chair Nalini Singh said individuals have lost their lives due to Police brutality recently and this is unacceptable and a disgraceful reflection of the Fiji Police Force, who should be the bastion of lawfulness in this country. She said they were alarmed to read that the proposed Police Bill 2020 which gives officers additional powers during arrests. “We have repeatedly raised our concerns about the excessive force used by the police during arrests on individuals, and the lack of transparency.”
