The maximum number of cases were reported from Thrikkakara, with 44 people testing positive. This was followed by Edappally with 41 new cases. Edathala and Kalamassery registered 21 new cases each, while Pallipuram saw 20 cases. One police officer tested positive. There are 50 active clusters in the district, according to officials on the district surveillance team. Of them, 46 are institutional clusters where people at an establishment or office have tested positive. Two are large community clusters where more than 50 people have tested positive.

Thrikkakara tops in COVID-19 cases in district

Testing and contact tracing to be intensified in the region from today Thrikkakara recorded another spike in COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with 50 persons testing positive in the region. The district registered 842 new cases and a positivity rate of 9.04%. The positivity rate on Sunday saw a slight drop from a rate of 10.22% on Saturday. The highest number of active cases in the district is in the age category of 40 to 50 years, with 853 people in the age bracket recovering from the infection. This is followed by 836 people between the ages of 20 and 30 years, and 835 people between 30 and 40 years. Active cases also include 748 people between the ages of 50 and 60 and 439 people between the ages of 60 and 70.

In fact, a significant number of patients required oxygen support. At the Government Medical College Hospital, Omandurar Estate, one of the earliest exclusive COVID-19 facilities in the city, 521 beds of the total 575 have been occupied. Of this, 337 patients were COVID-19 positive, while the remaining were patients with suspected symptoms of COVID-19. “The cases are on the rise and the admissions are proportionate to it. Around two-third of the patients required oxygen. We are admitting persons who have comorbidities and those with significant lung involvement. We are seeing more young persons with lung involvement. We are also seeing sudden deterioration in patients, including the young,” R. Jayanthi, Dean of the hospital, said.
