As people swarmed the Coimbatore Medical College (CMC) in Peelamedu on Monday to buy Remdesivir, the staff at the special sales counter had to issue tokens for the next four days.
“As of now the counter sells 500 vials of Remdesivir a day (a maximum of six vials for a buyer). A large number of people came to the campus and requested us to issue tokens rather than making them wait for long hours. We took their request into consideration and tokens were issued for four days”, said an official.

As the hospital had no free beds, even patients battling for their lives were either turned away or kept waiting, giving anxious moments to their family members.
Sordid scenes played out in front of the hospital on Tuesday when a critically ill patient gasping for breath in an almost unconscious state was given immediate care in the ambulance due to lack of beds.
A 34-year-old remand prisoner staged a dharna in front of the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College in Salem, demanding doctors to perform a surgery to rectify his kidney-related problem immediately. He also sought to subject him for mercy killing, as the pain was unbearable.
According to a police source, S Ganapathy, a resident of Vellore district, was lodged in Salem Central Prison in connection with the murder of his mother-in-law in 2019. He has been undergoing treatment at the government hospital for a kidney-related disease. While the judicial magistrate had granted him bail, none of his friends and relatives had come forward to provide surety and take him out of the jail.
