The Near North District School Board (NNDSB) has launched a wellness pledge as part of an initiative by the Student Senate to increase mental health awareness.
During Mental Health Week from May 3 to 7, Near North intermediate and secondary school students will be given an opportunity to take part in the board’s Wellness Together Pledge.

Pledging students will receive a wellness kit to promote ways of coping with stress.
There will be three kits to choose from – mind, body and spirit.
All three contain items to help students stay active and fit, keep their brains engaged and focused, and help build inner strength and balance.

NNDSB gets a $6-M joint boost for air quality improvements

The Near North District School Board is getting an over $6-million boost from the province and the feds combined, to improve air quality in classrooms.
The board was approved for $6.2 million in joint federal and provincial infrastructure funding under the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure’s Education Related stream.
NNDSB’s application was for the evaluation of building systems, verification of performance, review and update of recommended maintenance measures for air handling systems.
The funding covers the purchase and installation of ventilation equipment for 15 schools and will optimize air quality in a variety of spaces, including classrooms, offices and gyms.

The four area school boards will receive $13 million from the federal and provincial governments to upgrade infrastructure.
The funding announced Wednesday by Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is coming through the COVID-19 Reliance Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

The Near North District School Board will receive almost half – $6.22 million – with the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board receiving $4.58 million.
The federal government is providing 80 per cent of the funding for the program and the province the remaining 20 per cent.
