Did Anyone Say the Sedan Is Obsolete? The 2021 Acura TLX Says Otherwise

autoevolution 10 Apr 2021, 12:47 UTC · by The sedan is not the most practical body configuration, neither does it have real sporty characteristics. We’ve seen enough typical sedans during the last half a century and today s pragmatic criteria tells us that the best family cars have hatchback or van-like bodies. Despite this, here comes the Acura TLX – a “made by the book” sedan, full of advanced solutions, the result of a very consistent investment. Why did they do it? Acura is a premium brand and the sedan, generally speaking, is about travelling in style. All the premium car manufacturers pf the world are still producing sedans. Maybe the sedan shape is something old, yet it is a solid value. Even if its dimensions are relatively large, a sedan never looks as massive and undynamic as a tall car (MPV or SUV). The nicest ones breathe the temptation to be driven, even if this is not necessarily about speeding.

Test Drive: 2021 Acura TLX SH-AWD

For a quarter of a century, the Acura TL and its successor, the  TLX, now redesigned for 2021, have held court among the finest performing sports sedans on the market.  Acura is the premium/luxury brand of Japan s Honda, analogous to Toyota s Lexus, Hyundai s Genesis and Nissan s Infiniti. The brand dates back 35 years to 1986, when it introduced the Legend sedan. It became so popular that the manufacturer s leadership feared that the Legend would overwhelm the Acura trademark, so after 10 years it was re-named the 3.5RL. The company also marketed the Vigor, and in 1995 Acura introduced the mid-size TL, followed by the smaller TSX. In 2014 the two cars were replaced by the current TLX.
