University of Illinois and IBM Researching AI, Quantum Tech A $200 million partnership between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and IBM will create the Discovery Accelerator Institute, a collaborative space for studying uses for emerging technologies. June 09, 2021 •  The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Grainger College of Engineering is partnering with tech giant IBM to bolster the college’s research and workforce development efforts in quantum information technology, artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability. According to a news release from the university, the 10-year $200 million partnership will fund the future construction of a new Discovery Accelerator Institute, where university and IBM researchers will collaborate on solving global challenges with emerging technologies such as AI.

CSL students lead interdisciplinary team, continue to earn accolades

2/23/2021 Allie Arp, CSL Last spring, several CSL students’ research was selected to be the focus of a reproducibility competition at SC20, the flagship supercomputing conference in November. The continuation of that research resulted in the students, sponsored by the IBM-Illinois Center for Cognitive Computing Systems Research (C 3SR), winning two additional awards at that same conference, for their research that will be used by governmental agencies for years to come. In addition to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on High Performance Certificate of Appreciation from the reproducibility competition, a paper on the research, “Petascale XCT: 3D Image Reconstruction with Hierarchical Communications on Multi-GPU Nodes,” won the SC20 Best Paper Award.
