A new study reveals unintended CRISPR/Cas9 editing events

A new study reveals unintended CRISPR/Cas9 editing events A recent study by researchers from Sweden and the United Kingdom shows that CRISPR/Cas9-based genomic engineering can prompt unwanted on-target effects, and highlights the complexity of human DNA repair mechanisms in the presence of the powerful prokaryotic Cas9 nuclease. The paper is currently available on the bioRxiv preprint server. In the recent decade, genome engineering endeavors were revolutionized with the increasingly pervasive use of the CRISPR/Cas9 system. As a result, a myriad of toolsets has been developed, allowing efficient and straightforward loss-of-function perturbations of functional genomic elements. Consequently, both the functionality and applicability of these systems are astonishing. In the presence of a guide RNA (gRNA) complementary to the target site and alongside an adjacent protospacer motif (PAM), the expressed Cas9 endonuclease creates a double-strand break (DSB) at a particular genomic sit

Metabolic activators can reduce recovery time in patients with mild-to-moderate Covid-19

Metabolic activators can reduce recovery time in patients with mild-to-moderate Covid-19 Metabolic activators were found to reduce recovery time by as many as 3.5 days in patients with mild-to-moderate Covid-19, according to a Swedish-British study published today in Advanced Science. The researchers also found that treatment with the metabolic activators improved liver health and decreased the levels of inflammation, as shown by inflammatory markers. Conducted by researchers at Science for Life Laboratory at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, in collaboration with the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg and King s College, London, the human phase three clinical study showed that patients with mild-to-moderate Covid-19 who were also receiving standard care experienced a 3.5 day reduction in recovery time when receiving the combination of metabolic activators, nicotinamide riboside (NR), L-serine, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and L-carnitine tartrate. All four activators

World s oldest DNA sequenced from million-year-old mammoths

By Kelly MacnamaraAgence France-Presse PARIS Teeth from mammoths buried in the Siberian permafrost for more than a million years have yielded the world's oldest DNA ever sequenced, according to a recently published study, shining the genetic searchlight into the deep past. Researchers said the three specimens, one roughly 800,000 years old and two over a million years old,
