(WCJB) -The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office is trying to use vaccines to contain a coronavirus outbreak at the jail. The jail is reporting 28 inmates are in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. Those inmates are being held in a separate part of the jail. Wednesday, 67 inmates were given the vaccine. In total, 158 inmates have received at least one shot. However, nearly 400 inmates have said no to the vaccine.

Sheriff s deputies Monday were investigating the weekend death of a 13-year-old Gainesville girl killed in a shooting in southwest Gainesville. Maliyah Godwin was shot just before 10 p.m. Friday in Building A of the Majestic Oaks Apartments complex and died after being taken to a local hospital, according to Lt. Kaley Behl of the Alachua County Sheriff s Office. She is the only known victim. No arrests have been made, although the case is being actively investigated, Behl said. Sheriff Clovis Watson Jr. is asking the public for help. Deputies are looking for any information about Friday s incident, including what Maliyah did earlier in the day, who she may have spoken with before the shooting or anyone seen near the apartment building, Behl said.

Fundraiser set for family of Maliyah Godwin, killed last week in shooting

Jeremy Hood said the victim, Maliyah Godwin, is the younger sister of an employee at the restaurant. Half of the proceeds of all sales Wednesday will be given to Maliyah s family, which Hood described in an email as devastated.   The barbecue restaurant has two locations: 5121 NW 39th Ave. and 521 NE 23rd Ave. The 39th Avenue location is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., and the 23rd Avenue location is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Maliyah was shot and killed Friday evening. The Alachua County Sheriff s Office is investigating.  Maliyah was shot just before 10 p.m. Friday in Building A of the Majestic Oaks Apartments complex. She died at a local hospital and was the only known victim.
