Tuscaloosa s Arts n Autism will hold its first Piece by Piece Autism Awareness fundraising campaign this month. This event will span throughout the month of April, and its reach is community-wide, bringing together local businesses and residents to increase awareness.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward the organization s 2021 summer camps for children with autism, including tuition assistance for families that can t afford the expenses.

Anyone interested in participating in the campaign can stop by a number of local participating businesses and make a donation to the organization. In exchange, they will receive a puzzle piece donation card that will then be displayed in that business.

One decision voters must make is whether to change the city’s leadership in the midst of a global pandemic.
Maddox, who is seeking a fifth term in office, points to the city’s ongoing recovery as evidence that his approach worked.
And while there were criticisms of some of his decisions, most of those were soon superseded by state mandates that either matched or exceed the mayor’s own decisions.
Now, all of the city’s coronavirus-related regulations, such as facial coverings and occupation limits, are imposed by the Alabama Department of Public Health or the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
Pointed criticisms, highlighted accomplishments and claims of a better future highlighted Thursday night’s debate among Tuscaloosa’s mayoral candidates.
Incumbent Walt Maddox and those challenging his bid at a fifth term in the mayoral seat – local pastor and businessman Martin Houston and University of Alabama professor Serena Fortenberry – remained cordial during the debate as accusations and defenses flew among topics that varied from the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic to recruiting and retaining businesses and industries as well as the workforce to support them.
But among the most contentious of topics was Elevate Tuscaloosa.
This ambitious plan was championed by Maddox two years ago with the goal of to fund more than $500 million in education, transportation, recreation and public safety projects over the next three decades through a 1-cent sales tax increase.
